Do my episode images get embedded in the audio file?

Modified on Fri, 30 May at 8:25 AM

At RSS.com, episode cover art is included in your RSS feed using the <itunes:image> tag. This is the standard method supported by most podcast directories and apps, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and many others.

We do not embed images directly in the MP3 file using ID3 metadata at this time.

Why use the <itunes:image> tag?

This approach aligns with industry standards and is recognized by nearly all major podcast platforms. You can update the image in your dashboard and it will reflect in supported apps without having to re-encode or re-upload your audio file. Also, by not embedding images in the audio, your episodes stay smaller in size, which can reduce download times for listeners.

What about apps like that don't support it?

Some apps, like Overcast, prefer or only support embedded ID3 images. While we currently focus on RSS-based image delivery, we’re keeping an eye on how players evolve and may revisit support for embedded images in the future.
