What's the difference between Serial and Episodic?

Modified on Tue, 4 Mar at 2:31 AM

RSS.com lets you configure your podcast in the way that best fits your show’s format. This article explains the differences between Serial and Episodic settings so you can decide which option is right for you.

Episodic

By default, new RSS.com podcasts are set to Episodic, which means your newest episodes appear at the top of your show listings (both on RSS.com and in most listening apps).

Episodic ordering is best for standalone or topical shows where each episode can be heard in any order. Examples: news commentary, interviews, or weekly talk shows.

Episodes are sorted from newest to oldest, so your most recent release is always at the top for quick access.

Serial

If your show follows a storyline or you want your audience to start with the oldest episode first, choose Serial. Episodes will be arranged in oldest-to-newest order, prioritizing episode number over publication date and grouped by season if you choose to use seasons.

Serial ordering is best for narrative podcasts, audio dramas, or any series where listening in a specific order is important.

Episodes are nested by season (if applicable) and listed so that Episode 1 of a season is at the top, followed by Episode 2, and so on, making it easy for listeners to start at the beginning.

How to Switch from Episodic to Serial

If you originally set your show to Episodic but need to change it to Serial (or vice versa), follow these steps:

1. Log into your RSS.com dashboard

2. Go to your Podcast Settings

3. Find the ‘Episodes Order’ section

4. Select ‘Serial’ or ‘Episodic’ based on your preference

5. Save your changes

Once updated, directories like Apple Podcasts and Spotify will begin to display your episodes in the new order. Depending on the platform, it may take a few hours for changes to appear.

Tips for Better Organization

Use Seasons and Episode Numbers: this is especially helpful for Serial shows. Label each season and episode clearly in your dashboard so listening apps can organize them properly.

Check Directory Settings: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other platforms may have their own sorting preferences. Ensure your show is set to Serial if you want them to display episodes from oldest to newest.

Communicate with Your Audience: If you switch from Episodic to Serial, consider letting your listeners know. It helps them understand why the newest episode might appear at the bottom or if they need to start at Episode 1.
