Why am I getting an error when editing a transcript?

Modified on Tue, 10 Jun at 7:15 AM

If you're seeing an error like: Something is wrong with the transcript format or extension. Please check and try again. or VTT transcript is not valid.

It usually means that the transcript file you're trying to save is no longer formatted correctly.

Why this happens

When you generate a transcript using RSS.com, it’s created in the WebVTT (VTT) format, a widely supported standard used across many podcast apps and players (including ours). This format allows your transcript to sync perfectly with audio playback for features like captions and highlights.

However, VTT files must follow a strict syntax. Even a small change, like an extra space, missing timecode, or character in the wrong place, can break the formatting and trigger an error when saving.

Here’s an example of a valid VTT format:

```
WEBVTT
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000
Welcome to the podcast. I'm your host, Jim Cornall.
00:00:04.001 --> 00:00:08.000
How to fix it
If you're editing a transcript and getting an error:
1. Validate your file: Copy and paste your transcript using a free WebVTT validator like Live WebVTT validator to find formatting issues before saving.
2. Delete and regenerate: If editing doesn't work or the formatting is too tricky to fix, you can always delete the transcript and regenerate it from scratch in your Dashboard.
3. Need help? Feel free to contact our support team and share the transcript you're working with. We’re happy to help you troubleshoot or fix the formatting for you.
