When publishing an episode on RSS.com, you’ll see a field for adding keywords (or tags, since we use this terms interchangeably). These are completely optional, and here’s what you should know before spending time filling them out.
Are tags used for discoverability?
Not currently. Tags do not influence how your podcast is discovered in directories like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google Podcasts. Those platforms rely on your podcast’s title, description, categories, and episode-level metadata, not the tags field, to power their search algorithms.
So why does RSS.com include a tags field?
We’ve included it because we see long-term potential. Think of tags as a foundation for future features like:
- Clickable hashtags on your public podcast page
- Better internal search and filtering
- Smart episode recommendations based on shared topics
These features aren’t live yet, but we’ve been tracking usage to understand how podcasters naturally apply tags. That feedback is helping shape how we’ll build these tools in the future.
Should I still use tags now?
You can, but we recommend keeping it simple. Adding a few relevant tags can help you stay organized, especially if you want to group related episodes later. However, loading each episode with dozens of keywords won't provide any added benefit at this time, and might just create more work for you.
TL;DR: Tags aren’t used for discovery today, but they might power cool features in the future. Use them if they help you, but no need to overdo it.
