A custom domain can make your podcast more memorable and professional. Instead of sharing a long URL like rss.com/podcast/mypodcast, you can simply direct people to mypodcast.com, which then redirects visitors to your podcast’s page on RSS.com.
Anyone can still purchase a domain in domain registrars such as GoDaddy and Namecheap and setup a redirect so that mydomain.com goes to your RSS.com podcast website rss.com/podcasts/mypodcast. This can come very handy for instance when you want to tell your listeners in your podcast episodes, or on social media to visit mypodcast.com instead of a longer and less memorable web address.
There are 2 ways one can support custom domain once you buy a domain for you show:
❌ Direct DNS pointing: using this method, the URL in the address does not change upon redirect. It is a more advanced configuration, currently not supported, but in our roadmap.
✅ Redirect: the URL in the address changes upon redirect, but still, this allows you to have a memorable domain for your podcast. This is currently supported and here’s how to do it.
Why Use a Custom Domain?
A custom domain makes your podcast easier to share and remember. It also helps with branding, making your show appear more professional. Instead of asking listeners to remember a URL with multiple slashes and subdirectories, you can direct them to a simpler web address that forwards them to your RSS.com podcast page.
What Is a Domain Redirect?
A domain redirect, also known as URL forwarding, allows you to take a domain name you’ve purchased and automatically send visitors to another website. This means that when someone types in your custom domain, they are immediately redirected to your RSS.com podcast page without needing to type in the full RSS.com URL manually.
There are different types of redirects, but for this purpose, a 301 redirect (permanent) is recommended. It tells browsers and search engines that your domain should always forward to your podcast's RSS.com page.
How to Set Up a Redirect with Popular Domain Registrars
The exact steps will vary depending on your domain provider, but the process is generally straightforward. Below are instructions for some of the most commonly used registrars.
Redirecting a Domain with GoDaddy (link)
1. Log in to your GoDaddy account and go to the My Products page.
2. Find the domain you want to redirect and click on Manage.
3. Scroll down to the Forwarding section and select Add Forwarding.
4. Choose Forward to: URL and enter your RSS.com podcast page URL.
5. Make sure to select 301 (Permanent Redirect).
6. Click Save and wait for the changes to propagate, which may take a few minutes to a few hours.
Redirecting a Domain with Namecheap (link)
1. Log in to your Namecheap account and go to the Domain List.
2. Click on Manage next to the domain you want to forward.
3. Navigate to the Redirect Domain section.
4. Enter your domain in the Source URL field and your RSS.com podcast link in the Destination URL field.
5. Choose Permanent (301) as the redirect type.
6. Save your settings, and your redirect should be active shortly.
ℹ️ Note: If you purchase your domain from GoDaddy or another provider and want to redirect it to RSS.com, you only need to buy the domain name. You do not need a hosting plan, just the domain itself.
Common Questions
❓How Long Does a Redirect Take to Work?
Most domain redirects take effect within a few minutes, but in some cases, it may take up to 24 hours for DNS changes to fully propagate across the internet.
❓What If My Domain Isn’t Redirecting?
Check if you saved the changes correctly and ensure that your domain does not have conflicting DNS settings. If you are using Cloudflare or another DNS provider, make sure they are set to allow forwarding.
❓Can I Redirect a Subdomain Instead of the Whole Domain?
Yes, many registrars allow you to forward only a subdomain, such as listen.mypodcast.com, instead of the entire domain. This is useful if you want to use your main domain for something else.
❓Does a Redirect Affect SEO?
A 301 redirect ensures that search engines understand your domain is forwarding permanently. However, since your podcast is hosted on RSS.com, you will not have full SEO control over the content. The primary benefit of a custom domain redirect is ease of sharing rather than SEO optimization.
ℹ️ Note: we encourage you to activate your custom website at RSS.com after redirecting the domain.
