What are podcast categories?

Modified on Wed, 21 May at 2:34 AM

At RSS.com, podcast categories are based on the official Apple Podcasts category list. This ensures that your show is categorized using the industry-standard taxonomy adopted by the majority of podcast directories and apps.

While some third-party platforms may display a wider or more specific range of categories, such as “Formula 1”, those are often custom tags or internal categorizations. Because RSS feeds must conform to Apple's specifications for compatibility, our available category options match those outlined by Apple Podcasts.

If your preferred category (like "Formula 1") isn’t listed, we recommend choosing the closest relevant Apple-approved category, such as “Automotive” or “Sports News,” depending on your show's focus. This won’t prevent third-party platforms from indexing your podcast under more specific terms if they allow custom tagging on their end.

Importantly, changing categories at RSS.com would not negatively affect your overall rankings. Rankings are driven more by engagement (downloads, follows, reviews) than by the specific category alone. That said, Apple only allows one primary and one secondary category per show, so strategic category selection is still valuable.
